Mel: I'm not sure -- I would suspect so. I can't imagine that they would have gotten rid of it.

Jenn -- After I posted this, I was talking to my mother and she said similar, that although there was discrimination in other parts of the country, it was much more subdued, if not totally missing, here in Iowa. She said that they'd often travel to Mason City for shopping or similar back in the day and there was an African-American family living across the way from one of the stores, and they were a very well-respected family in Mason. So that's very interesting...when I first saw it, I was as you saw above -- a bit amused that something like that would happen. Good to know we were ahead of the times in *something*.

Pralle - My grandpa grew up in Des Moines in the '30s and '40s. My mom has told me lots about his high school days at North (Go Polar Bears!) in Des Moines in those days. North was not a segregated school, even 60 or more years ago, and Grandpa Jim had a diverse group of friends. One of his high school photos is on the wall of my house - Grandpa playing in a jazz band with other guys, black and white alike. There's always a lot of hype about how white-bread middle America is, and I always enjoy sharing the photo with people, knowing that Des Moines was at least a little ahead of the curve in terms to civil rights. If only I had a scanner I'd scan it and show it to you! Digging your Scanner Love series, by the way.

Jenn's last blog post..Friday Feast for Sunday Brunch
