My kids are 6 years apart in age, and I definitely find myself rethinking decisions I made with the oldest (now 20) in his teen years now that I have #2 at 14 and #3 at 8. Adding to the high-wire-walking we parents must do is the fact that the world for teenagers will be drastically different for my daughter by the time she gets there than it was for #1 - AND - each kid is different - so even if you find what works for one kid before they're grown and gone, it doesn't necessarily follow that those same parenting techniques will be effective with the next one.

Sheesh!

So, I relegate myself to a) doing the best I can with the information I have now, b) knowing ahead of time I'm going to make mistakes and someone somewhere down the line will no doubt blame me for screwing up their spouse and c) modeling what I most want to teach them. In other words, I try to lead by example.

I will admit, though, I get great satisfaction in retorting, "Don't like my rules? Tough. You'll get to make your own and torment your children with them one day. Until then, take notes, because you will one day find these same words coming out of your own mouth - I promise you. And, it will be no more pleasant for you than it has been for me to find out you have finally, no matter how much you railed against it, become your mother."

You are so right. This does seem like a pretty thought-provoking article. I had to read a few parts a second time to get the full gist, though. The way some of it is worded, I am not quite sure how much to agree or disagree with.

I do, however, look around at my daughter's friends and part of me is scared to death for our future. Self-esteem is way to important to many of the parents today.

By the way, your address on 'Mad Click Mondays' is missing the '.' so the link won't work!
