Bloggers of the World! I would like to run a Blog-Off: a contest between bloggers with some monetary awards and some contributions to charity as a result (plus, fame, fortune, and lots of prestige), but I’d like to know how many people would be interested in participating. If this sounds interesting, read on:
The basic format would be something like this: You get a subject and you have to write a blog post on your own blog about it by a certain day of the week. Then everyone else would have until the end of the week to read and vote for the top 3 entries. This continues for several rounds until a winner is declared.
The details of it can be worked out later, but that’s the basic idea. Everyone contributes a dollar amount (something around $10-$20 USD) to the cause and at the end, the winner(s) get a portion (50% split up between them) and the other 50% goes to a charity. Right now I’m thinking about the March of Dimes, but I’m open to suggestions.
The advantages are that you get ideas to write blog posts about, you get some incentive to read other blogs, and you get to meet some great people. Disadvantages are that you’re on a bit of a schedule to get things written and read (gotta keep it moving), but most people find a rhythm that works for them and it’s not too bad.
I participated in several Blog-Offs for cancer ran by Courtney of Five Second Dance Party and had a great time, plus met a bunch of terribly interesting people. I highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it before, and if you are a seasoned veteran, why not jump in again?

Nathan, I have a VERY busy July but I am sure I could come up with someone once a week. Let me know the schedule you were thinking and you can most likely count me in.
I would love to do this. March of Dimes is my mother’s pet charity, so I would love that even more. It would be interesting to see what topics we’d have to blog about. Not sure I’d have anything profound to say, but what the hell…I’ll take a whack at it.

Awesome idea, my blog is down until this weekend, but after that I’m in. Besides the voting, how about using serp rankings in determining a winner?

Timing: I’d like to start within the next week or so, and it depends on how many people and so forth. Usually they go for a few weeks — 3, maybe 4 to 5. Kinda depends on participants, theme, etc. I’m flexible in those terms.
Schedule: Typical schedule for doing this is you get your topic on Sunday. You have from then to midnight Tuesday to write a post on it. Wednesday through Saturday midnight to vote on all of the entries. Then Sunday is a new topic again. We can vary that if you like, but that’s the general idea.
serp rankings: If I knew what a serp ranking was, I could comment on that.
I’m going to be offline the first week in August. I may have to bow out, despite my love of imposing my views on others.

Stacey: Not necessarily. We can work around a lot of odd schedules, especially if we don’t have dozens of people to coordinate. No need to make it a pain in the ass.

You know I love blog-offs.
I’d be in, but I’d probably have to mail you the entry fee. My PayPal is all messed up right now and running off the wrong bank account and blah blah blah. If that’s fine then yeah, I’m in.
I’m so going to do this again starting in January, too. I’m going to do the 3 Day in 2010 so I’ll be fundraising hardcore for it starting pretty soon!
